Dog Attacks Owner's Mother

A Knoxville woman is recovering from serious injuries after being attacked by her family's dog, reports say.

Mary Weaver, 79, suffered injuries to both her legs and one arm and was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The Pit Bull, owned by the woman's son, attacked while a neighbor watched. He retrieved a gun and fired two shots into the ground to scare off the dog – which worked well enough that the dog let go and hid.

Emergency services arrived to find the dog under the crawl space in a nearby building. They initially tried to capture the dog, but when it became clear it would not be possible to do so safely, they shot the dog, The animal died on scene and was taken to an animal shelter for a necropsy.
