Suits Against Yaz and Yasmin Move Forward

Statutory-type litigation, which may be the basis for future suits, has been filed and will proceed to court alleging Yaz and Yasmin are harmful, reports say.

The suits primarily involve Yaz and Yasmin, birth control pills that are made using a type of progestin called drospirenone, a synthetic progestin. The effect, some say, can elevate the body's potassium levels, which can lead to potentially serious heart problems.

Studies attorneys cite the possibility of life-threatening blood clots in some women taking drospirenone contraceptives compared with women not taking any type of pill, reports say. Reports also say Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin, have been warned at least three times by the FDA over misleading television advertisements which overstated the efficiency the drugs and minimized their risks.

Some 300 women have filed lawsuits against Bayer over Yaz and Yasmin, claiming strokes, blood clots, gallbladder disease and other health issues. Reports also state that late in 2009 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits pending in federal court were to be consolidated for centralized and coordinated pre-trial proceedings in the Yasmin and Yaz cases in US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
